I vowed that I wouldn’t begin this message with any comments about weather since I’ve gotten into the habit of doing this, BUT this weather has been so beautiful and is forecasted to remain this way, so I just can’t resist. ENJOY!

It’s been a great 99 Days of Summer at Johnson Motors, and our autumn days are continuing this trend. Sales, service, parts, and body shop have all been very busy. We thank you for that!

This newsletter will focus on several topics. We’ll look at the all-new 2014 Silverado and Impala, industry accolades, our new Johnson Motors Preferred Owner Program, and a smartphone offer from Chevrolet.

Awards, Awards, and more Awards!

Chevy is certainly the ‘good news’ brand in the car industry.  A sampling of awards includes:

The 2014 Impala has been named by Consumer Reports as the best new sedan...PERIOD.  This is the first time in history that an American car has won this distinction.  Our Impala sales are up almost 300%!  Stop in for a test drive.

The all-new 2014 Silverado was just named the best full-size pickup by Consumer Reports and several car magazines.  It has received a 5 Star NHTSA crash rating, the only pickup to have achieved this.  

Chevy has more 5 Star awards for overall vehicle safety than Ford and Toyota combined.  Fewer vehicles are achieving this rating now since NHTSA has raised the bar by changing the severity of the crashes.  5 Star ratings were frequently awarded a couple of years ago, but not now.

Chevrolet has received more 2013 J.D. Power Initial Quality awards than any other brand!

2014 Silverado Launch Gains Momentum

The 2014 Silverado launch continues to gain momentum. We have excellent availability on all of the body styles—regular cab, double cab, and crew cab—with a variety of trim levels. This includes work trucks, LS, LT, and LTZ models, with two all-new engines, a V6 and V8.

The new Double Cab replaces the Extended Cab and features conventional front-hinged rear doors with outside door handles. A big change from the Extended Cab, the new configuration makes the truck stronger (due to the central pillar the rear doors are hinged from,) quieter, and safer in a side-impact crash.

The EcoTec3 engines are all-new, with Direct Injection, Active Fuel Management, and Variable Valve Timing. Together, these three advanced technologies provide more power, higher fuel economy, and smoother and quieter operation. The 5.3 liter V8 has significantly more power than the previous 5.3, while gaining fuel economy. This engine is more economical than Ford’s Ecoboost V6 without resorting to twin turbochargers which are hugely expensive to replace.

Maybe the biggest engine surprise, however, is the near-silent and very powerful V6. One would never guess that there’s a V6 under the hood without opening it.

The Chevy Spark is not an Electric Vehicle

We should be more specific, and hopefully clear up some common misperceptions about the Spark. The Chevy Spark’s electric model (the EV) will be available in selected markets (California and Oregon), but the models currently in stock at Johnson Motors, and most Chevy Dealers across the country, are in fact gasoline-powered.

This popular car is powered by a very fuel-efficient 4-cylinder inline, 1.2 liter DOHC engine, and boasts a fuel-sipping 37 mpg on the highway, and an estimated 28 mpg for city driving.

The Spark isn’t a brand-new car, either. In fact, it’s been sold around the world for several years, and is thoroughly road-tested and ready for the American market. Instead of being an import being sold to the domestic market, the Spark is one of the first “export” cars that Chevy sold abroad, and introduced to America in 2013.

The amazing little Spark holds several #1 spots in its category. It has the lowest starting MSRP at $12,170, a 9.3 out of 10 Kelley Blue Book consumer rating, ten airbags, nearly 32 cubic feet of cargo space, and a 7-inch MyLink radio/interactive screen that handles a variety of function.

As I write this, we're past the middle of August. I guess time DOES fly when you're having fun! It's been a great summer for me and my family and I hope yours has been a great one, too.

At Johnson Motors, we’re extremely busy. Spring and summer have set all-time records for new vehicles, used vehicles, and service. Model Year End Clearance is going on now with great incentives from both Chevy and Cadillac. We have just 50 new 2013s left, but with a nice selection of Malibu, Equinox, and Cadillac SRX. Since these are some of our best-selling lines, come in soon if you’re interested in a 2013!

2014s are streaming in now, with the ALL-NEW Silverado leading the way. We have 59 all-new Silverados on the lot and on the way in. Both Silverado and Impala have just been recognized with some impressive industry accolades.

The Used Car SuperStore has some of the nicest new vehicle trades I’ve ever seen. All of these preowned vehicles are priced under the Internet-average price, which is one reason why they’re selling so well. The All-New 2014 Silverados are here!

We now have 59 units on the ground and on the way. Crew Cabs started production first, and people have been raving about these trucks ever since they arrived. New engines feature a 5.3 liter V8 with 355 horsepower and fuel economy that beats Ford’s Ecoboost V6.

 

The Silverado engine is new from the oil pan up, and features Direct Injection, Variable Valve Timing, and Active Fuel Management. While these features may be technological marvels, they are not expensive future maintenance and repair bills. You won’t be replacing expensive turbochargers if you use your truck like a truck. (The Ecoboost V6 has TWO turbochargers, costing about $2000 each to replace! Chevy’s engine warranty is 40,000 miles longer, too.)

An all-new 4.3 liter V6 is now in production, and it promises (according to the press reports) to be all many will need unless they do heavy towing. Our first one will arrive soon. Finally, a 6.2 liter 420 hp engine is just starting production, and it should be a beast!

The new DoubleCabs are arriving now, replacing the venerable Extended cab model that we’ve loved for so long. The DoubleCab looks much like the Crew Cab with a shortened rear door. Each door has an outside and inside door handle so that a rear seat rider can open his/her door without the front door needing to be open.

The Double Cab is EXTREMELY solid because of the additional pillar on each side. One slam of any door will show you the difference. This configuration will pass future crash standards with ease. In fact, the 2014 Silverado (and the GMC Sierra) are the first trucks to earn a 5 Star crash rating since the standards were raised.

Major improvements abound, from DuraLife brake rotors and CornerStep rear bumper to EZ-Lift and Lower tailgate, and 8-inch color touch-screen with Chevrolet MyLink.

There’s more good news! GM has been named the second highest-quality vehicle manufacturer according to J.D. Power, the leading quality information company in the world.

Test-driving the 2013 Cadillac ATS 2.0 liter Turbo

I recently had the opportunity to test-drive the boss’s 2014 Cadillac ATS 2.0 liter turbo. What a treat! I had been admiring it for weeks whenever I saw it on the lot at our dealership, and finally I was going to get my chance to drive it. 

I planned ahead for the weekend, choosing a 100+ mile loop through the winding hills of  northwestern Pennsylvania. I figured that my choice of roads would give me every imaginable type of condition to test the car...from straight and narrow Interstate, to looping, roller-coaster, winding side roads, as well as a few with less than perfect surfaces. 

The ATS surprised me at every turn. On the flat, straight highways, I tested acceleration and ride comfort. The vehicle accelerated smoothly and reached speeds of 90+ so quickly that I was startled, especially because the ride was so smooth and the acceleration so effortless. The only shortcoming I could find was a slight turbo-lag, but it’s so slight as to barely be noticeable. 

The winding hills were another story entirely. I’m used to most cars being on the edge of control when taking turns a bit too fast. With the ATS, I often found myself experiencing strong G-forces, and discovering to my surprise that I was driving about 20 to 30 mph faster than I’d normally take turns. The car hugged the road perfectly, and with the exception of the sideways tug of G-forces, I had little other indication that I was taking a turn at high speeds. 

To put it simply, I was blown away by the ATS and its handling. Years ago I owned a SAAB SPG and felt I’d never own another car that was so much fun to drive. I’m please to say that I’ve found it, and it’s the Cadillac ATS. I hear a 3.6 liter coupe may be in the works, and I’m already trying to imagine how that’s going to handle.
